WE ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About Your Trip to Cusco and Machu Picchu

Everything you need to know about bookings, official permits, altitude acclimatization and logistics before starting your Andean expedition.

How far in advance should I book the Inca Trail or Machu Picchu?

For the Classic Inca Trail (4D/3N), government capacity is strictly limited to 500 permits per day (including porters and guides), so we recommend booking 4 to 6 months in advance. For train trips to Machu Picchu or alternative treks (Salkantay or Lares), we suggest booking 4 to 8 weeks ahead, especially to secure tickets for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.

How should I prepare for the altitude in Cusco, and what precautions do you take?

Cusco sits at 3,399 m (11,152 ft) above sea level. We recommend arriving at least 24 to 48 hours before any trek to acclimatize gradually. During this time, stay well hydrated, drink coca tea and eat light meals. On all our expeditions we carry a high-altitude first aid kit, a pulse oximeter and portable medical oxygen tanks available 24 hours a day.

What is your flexible booking policy, and which payment methods do you accept?

You secure your spot with just a 30% deposit, which goes toward the immediate purchase of official name-specific permits and train tickets. The remaining balance (70%) is paid conveniently upon arrival in Cusco before your tour. We accept credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex), PayPal and secure SSL-encrypted transfers with no surprise fees.

How do small-group trips differ from conventional tours?

Our departures run with a maximum of 4 to 8 explorers per group. This ensures 100% personalized service, a hiking pace that suits you, in-depth archaeological explanations without megaphones or rushing, and access to quiet campsites far from the big tourist crowds.

What should I pack in my backpack for a trek or day trip?

Your original physical passport or ID is essential (it is required to enter Machu Picchu and board trains). Bring layered clothing (thermal and windproof), a rain poncho, broken-in hiking boots, sunscreen, insect repellent and a reusable water bottle to support our Zero Plastic policy.

Are the guides certified official guides, and what languages do they speak?

100% of our guides are certified official tour guides, university graduates and born in Cusco. They speak fluent Spanish and English, as well as ancestral Quechua. They also hold current Wilderness First Aid certifications (WFA/WAFA).

What are the meals like during treks and camping?

Our professional mountain chefs prepare hot, nutritious and balanced gourmet Andean menus made to order. At no extra cost, we accommodate specific dietary needs: vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets, allergies or medical restrictions shared at the time of booking.

How do you ensure the well-being and fair pay of Andean porters?

We promote ethical, humane tourism from day one. We strictly comply with and exceed Porter Law No. 31614: we guarantee fair wages above the legal average, accident insurance, high-end thermal mountain gear, strict control of load weight and full meals identical to those of the rest of the team.

What happens in the event of bad weather, strikes or flight rescheduling?

We monitor routes and weather conditions in real time, 24 hours a day. In the event of flight delays, strikes or weather contingencies, we immediately activate protocols to rebook and reschedule transfers, trains and entry times so you don't miss your experience, always putting your safety first.

Do tours include pickup and drop-off at my hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley?

Yes, all our expeditions include private door-to-door pickup from your hotel or accommodation in Cusco's historic center, as well as from hotels in the Sacred Valley (Pisac, Urubamba or Ollantaytambo) if your itinerary departs directly from that area.
