Experience Overview

The Machu Picchu 2-day / 1-night tour by train is our top recommendation for experiencing the citadel at a relaxed pace. On day one you travel to Aguas Calientes and unwind at a hotel near the hot springs; on day two you head up to Machu Picchu early, when the morning light and drifting mist make the scenery even more breathtaking, and you take the train back to Cusco in the afternoon.

By staying overnight at the foot of the mountain you skip the extreme pre-dawn start of the day trip and gain the flexibility to add a hike up Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, two of the climbs with the best views of the citadel.

Tour highlights

  • Train journey through the Sacred Valley and the Urubamba canyon, with views of snowcapped peaks and cloud forest.
  • Free afternoon in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo): craft market, hot springs and restaurants.
  • Morning entry to Machu Picchu with a 2 to 2.5-hour guided tour.
  • Free time after the tour to explore or take photos, depending on your assigned circuit.

About Aguas Calientes

Aguas Calientes is the gateway town to Machu Picchu. It lies at 2,040 m above sea level on the banks of the Urubamba River and takes its name from its thermal baths, perfect for relaxing before your visit. There is no road access: you arrive by train or on foot from Hidroeléctrica.

Tips and what to bring

  • Valid original passport (the same one used to buy your ticket).
  • Backpack of 20 liters max for the day of your visit; your large luggage can stay at your hotel in Cusco.
  • Layered clothing, a rain jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent and a hat.
  • A swimsuit if you plan to visit the Aguas Calientes hot springs.

When should you book?
